I never set up a 4-digit device passcode when I got my last iPhone, but when trying to erase all content before sending old phone in Apple, it keeps asking for the device passcode and the process stops. What do I do?

I never set up a 4-digit device passcode when I got my last iPhone, but when trying to erase all content so that I can send in to Apple, it is asking for that device code and with me not having one, it won’t follow through with erasing all content. What must I do?
