login: Could not determine audit condition

Under High Sierra, I suddenly find that I am unable to enter commands in the Terminal. When a window opens I see the following


Last login: Wed Feb  5 11:35:52 on console

login: login: Could not determine audit condition

[Process completed]


I've Google searched for a solution but nothing has worked so far. Thanks in advance for any fresh advise on this issue.

Yes. My searching found these. Both posts initially suggest deleting the /usr/bin/login file. But I am unable to delete the file because "login can't be modified or deleted because it's required by macOS". There's a more complicated solution in the first post, but making those changes to Terminal preferences had no affect when I opened a new Terminal window.
