Changing the background colour of a shape in stencil alpha mode - please help!

Hey!

I'm using the shape generator (circle) overlaid on a clip in stencil alpha mode so that the video appears inside the circle, and the circle gradually gets bigger to reveal the full frame. I would really like to change the surrounding area of the circle from black to white, but can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. It seems like it should be so simple and I'm just missing something, but going out of my mind!

I have tried playing with the fill colours and blend mode. Have also tried adding a white background from the generators, sandwiching it in between the video clip and the circle, and then playing with the blend modes. I can use silhouette alpha to make the circle's surrounding colour white (yay) but then the middle of the circle is filled black, covering up the clip at the bottom of the stack.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

If I understand correctly, you are essentially using the Shapes generator as a mask.

What I suggest you try is to use an actual mask.

Drag a shape mask or a vignette mask from the effects browser onto the clip that you want to reveal. Adjust the size of the mask using keyframes (much as you are doing now with the generator).

To make the background white, just add a white generator below the clip. Done.
