mac book pro mid 2012 ram limits

hi guys,

would you recommend upgrading mac book pro mid 2012 (pre retina) to 2x8gb ram or is it best to keep to max 2x4gb ram?

has anyone done it successfully?

I see apple recommend max 2x4gb ram.

crucial say it can be done (and even emailed them) and when model chosen they recommend an option of 2x8gb ram.

also any recommendations on which manufacture to best purchase with?

cheers.

OWC also has a UK partner:

Also try Crucial UK.

I know of several of our senior contributors with that model who are successfully running 2x8GB from OWC.

To do this you must use either Crucial or OWC because when you go over Apple's outdated RAM specs, you need quality RAM. I trust no other brands/vendors. "ValueRAM" from Kingston and Corsair have been very spotty in function since 2006 when Apple switched to Intel processors. A number of posters had serious issues that went away when PNY RAM was removed and replaced with Crucial or OWC RAM.

Not the place to cut corners, IMHO.

I have the same MBP and upgraded mine to 2 X 4 GB and an SSD (instead of the super slow 5400 rpm spinning drive) and it has been working great. Also bought at OWC - I checked their international shipping rates with a "fake" made up order and it did not appear to be that expensive. Another good choice for RAM is Crucial (direct, not a reseller who sells "bargain" versions).
