4 Airport Extremes & Altice ONE

I currently have 4 Airport extremes ( 5th gen ) each connected to each other via Ethernet and 1st APPLE ROUTER is plugged into my old Verizon FIOS Router , I am Looking to QUIT Verizon FIOS and Go to ALTICE ONE . I never used FIOS WIFI and love the airport extreme set up .

CAN I use my current Airport Extreme home network with a new Altice one box ? and if so what do i need to know to set it up properly ? Thanks Ed

OK, thanks. I am assuming that the "main" AirPort connects to the Fios router now, and that the other AirPorts connect to the "main" AirPort.

If that is the case, then things should work if you connect the AirPort Extreme to the new Altice One router as follows below. Please note that the word "should" is not the same as the word "will" though.

Power off all of the AirPorts in any order that you want

Power off the Altice One router

Change the Ethernet cable that connects to the main AirPort from its current connection at the Fios router to one of the four yellow Ethernet ports on the Altice one router

Power up the Altice one router and let it run for a minute or two

Power up only the main AirPort and check to see that it has a green light and that devices can connect to the AirPort network

If all is OK, power up the second AirPort and run the same checks again

If OK, power up the third AirPort and run the checks

If OK, power up the fourth AriPort and run the checks

If OK, you are all set.

A Mac laptop will tell you at a glance which AirPort that you are connected to at any given time.

PCs do not "switch" from one access point to another all that well as the move about the house, so while the PC changes locations, it may stay connected to the previous access point. After a few minutes, it might switch to the closer AirPort, and might not.

Mac laptops do a very nice job of switching quickly between access points. Please post back when you have a friend with a Mac laptop who will let you borrow it for a time and we'll show you some neat tricks.

Ok so i got a mac book pro and checked by being next to each router approx 8 feet and also checked on my airport utility for each router that mac book was connected to router i was next to while doing speed test . I get 180 MBPS wifi Router 1 / 33 Mbps Router 2 ./ 170 MBps Router 3 and 180 Mbps Router 4 . Please keep in mind I just replaced Router 2 and new router 2 is doing same thing very low WIFI Speed .

Please note also Route 1 other lan ports are being used ( running Ethernet to a gig switch ) as is also router 2 other lans are being used ( also running ethernet to a gig ) switch router 3 only 1 lan is being used to connect to router 4

Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this ? Thanks

Swap locations of Router 2 with either Router 3 or Router 4.

If the speeds remain low at the original location of Router 2, then you have a wiring problem or a slow Ethernet port on the Ethernet switch. A mis-wired cable or connector will still allow a connection, but speeds will drop dramatically.

If Router 2 is still slow when it is located at the original location of either 3 or 4, then Router 2 itself has problems, even though it might be new.

When you get things working, move the Mac laptop close to Router 1. Hold down the option key while you click on the WiFi menu. Post a screenshot of the read out. Then, do the same with 2, 3 and 4. Example:

Edit to above post.

IF......the MacBook Pro has an Ethernet port, post back to confirm........before......you swap locations of the AirPorts.

Reason......we can use the Ethernet port on the Mac to check the signal speeds arriving at the WAN port of AirPort 2, which will tell us if the wiring that is going to the location at AirPort 2 is working up to speed.

If Ethernet is not up to speed, then WiFi never will be either.

Bob,

I figured it out

my Ethernet through the switches is always 300 MBPS no issue , i felt it was a radio signal issue , so i made the 5GHZ signal identifiable by checking off 5GHZ Newtork name and connected all my ipad and iphones to that frequency and Viola no speed no issues at all .

Second thing i did my kids laptops which are old Lenovo T410 laptops on Router 2 I changed the Radio Channel selection for the 2.4 GHZ signal to manual from Auto and selected Channel 9 and that seems to have solved that bottle neck of signal speed , I have no issues now and they are at 40 50 MBPS which i think is limit on those old wifi cards.

I am a happy camper with my 4 , 5th gen Airport extremes now .

I found info for what i did on the following links :

2- https://www.imore.com/getting-slow-speeds-or-dropped-connections-your-airport-extreme-or-airport-express-heres-how-fix-it

thanks for your help

Nice work. Devices are supposed to connect to the 5 GHz signal when they are close to an AirPort and then switch over to 2.4 GHz when they move a room or two away from the AirPort.

Even if they connect at 2.4 GHz, they still should be connecting at up to 130 Mbps speeds when they close to the AirPort, so I have no idea why you were having issues with only one AirPort at a given location when things worked fine at other locations. I suppose it is possible that there was some sort of weird interference issue with 2.4 GHz at one AirPort location, but this would be rare.

That's the way things work here, but no two networks are exactly alike.

Personally, I don't like having to manually tell devices whether to connect to the 5 GHz named network or the 2.4 GHz named network, but some users don't seem to mind doing this. If you are OK with this, then it sounds like you have things solved until the next mystery appears.
