Catalina - Music - Track progress Bar Scrolling

Hi guys, am I right in saying that the ability to mouse over the track bar and use the magic mouse horizontal scrolling to "scrobble" though a track has been omitted for this current release version?

iTunes had this feature and it was great for me.

Clicking on a specific place on the bar is far less intuitive.

I use iTunes a lot whilst playing guitar and building tabs to play back bits of songs over and over and this feature was very helpful not having to be accurate with the mouse whilst fumbling my arms around a guitar.. I'm hoping it was just forgotten and not intentionally removed..

Hello Jamnoggin,

Thanks for posting your question about the Music app for macOS Catalina. I understand you're unable to use horizontal scrolling with the progress bar in the Music app.

I tested this out on my device and I'm able to rewind and fast-forward by hovering over the progress bar and using horizontal scrolling. Are you able to use horizontal scrolling on other apps? If not, you might want to check your Mouse preferences under System Preferences > Mouse, particularly the "Scrolling" drop-down: Change Mouse preferences on Mac

If that doesn't help, create a new administrator account and log in there to test and see if the same behavior occurs. This will tell you if you have a system-wide issue, or if it's user account-specific: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Hi Jamnoggin,

Thanks for replying and sharing the results of testing in a new user. It sounds like it might be a good idea to test this in safe mode next, which would help to determine if there might be certain software causes, including third-party software issues. Here's how to Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac.

Also, are you using an Apple-made mouse, or third-party? Even though it's app-specific, it might be worth testing a second mouse if you have one available.

Thanks for getting back to me, Joseph.

Glad to hear the feature hasn't been removed.

Yes I can horizontal scroll in other apps eg. Chrome, Finder.

I've tested both a new Administrator user account and an existing user account and still no horizontal hover "scrobbling" in the Music app.

Very weird.

I've tried without teamviewer running too but still no joy..

I'll have to do some digging.

For now, alt+cmd + arrow key on the right of the space bar might be the best way to do this whilst juggling a guitar.

I've just tested in Safe Mode and while the natural scrolling works inside other apps as normal, it still does not move the track time when hovering over it and scrolling horzontally.

Safe mode also has audio disabled anyway, so it doesn't pretend to play the track.

When hovering over the track time, it does however trigger the UI overlay of the playback point and track progress, end timestamps and the three dots for the track menu next to the track title displayed.

Also I have checked and the horizontal natural scrolling works with the scroll bars in the 'songs' layout inside the Music application just fine.

I am using the original battery powered Gen 1 Magic Mouse that came with my iMac.

I appear to have mislaid an old Microsoft mouse with a rocking scroll wheel to test with another mouse.

-and Teamviewer isn't passing the horizontal scroll input from my laptop trackpad either.

I'll see if I can locate a mouse with a scroll wheel and see if Shift+Scroll works for a horizontal scroll.

Thank you for giving safe mode a try. Based on what's happening and the results of those tests, I recommend using this to Contact Apple Support.
