Connecting Netgear CM1000 to Time Capsule

Hi there,

A similar question has been posted back in 2017, but the solution provided (to turn off cable modem for ~20 minutes) don’t actually work for me.

I’ve just replaced my Comcast modem for this Netgear CM1000 today. After activating the modem with Comcast, internet is coming through normally.

Problem is that i can’t get the TC to work as a router (and it was working perfectly with the previous Comcast modem).

I have the latest firmware already installed (7.9.1) on my TC, and honestly don’t know what else to do. I know little to nothing about networks, so would appreciate if someone could help me.

Airport utility tells me that I don’t have internet connection, and also don’t have a DNS server. Should I type a DNS manually?

Also, when opening the Internet tab, the IPv4 is 169.254.XX.XXX , but not sure if this right or not.

Subnet mask is coming as 255.255.255.0.

Router address 10.0.0.1

Thanks a lot guys in advance for any help. Being without wireless these days is pretty tough... can’t even play the Sonos for my little baby to sleep in his room!

What do you have plugged into the CM1000 so you know internet is working?

I am guessing a computer. If so unplug the computer.. power down the CM1000 for 20min say (might be too much or too little). Plug WAN port of the Time Capsule to the CM1000 ethernet port.

Now power up the CM1000 and wait for the modem lights to stabilise.. then power up the TC.

It should be able to pick up the IP address.. the issue was you had it connected to computer which grabbed the address and system won't release it.

If you are still having difficulty, I would recommend that you reset the Time Capsule back to its factory default settings and then set it up again. This is always a good idea whenever you change the modem, or change Internet Service Providers.....because the Time Capsule is likely retaining the "old" settings that it used to connect to your "old" modem.

Post back if you need more help with this.

Thanks a lot mate, it finally worked!

I’ve tried last night (for 3 times) leaving the modem off (even for over 1 hour), and it didn’t work.

I guess the main difference now was to connect the Ethernet cable, power the modem first, wait the lights to stabilize, and then power the TC. It got the DNS numbers from Comcast, and I’m finally online again!! :)

Many thanks once again!
