Canon SLR Geotagging in Apple Photos

I love that when I take a photo on my iPhone, it tags my location. I also love that Apple Photos curated my photos based on this data when displaying the photos and creating Memories collections.

I also have a Canon EOS Digital SLR and want to try and get the same functionality using Apple Photos. Ideally I want the process to be as automatic as possible.

I’ve seen that some of the new Canon SLR’s (90D etc) connect vía your iPhone for Geotagging, I’ve also seen devices like the Canon GP-E2, however I don’t know if the geolocation data captured will work in Apple Photos. Has anyone tried these or does anyone have another tip for tagging these photos?

My Lumix FZ300 does that as well. But it is not very convenient out in the field. The problem ist, the camera needs to set up a network connection to the kPhone, and this is draining the batteries quickly.

It is much better to use a camera, that has a built-in GPS . If the camera can embed the GPS into the exif tags of the photos, Photos for Mac will be able to work with the location data.

Or carry a separate GPS tracker, a Garmin or similar. A separate, portable GPS tracker will work a full day or longer without having to recharge the batteries.

Photos cannot use GPS track logs to geocode photos, but there are plenty of applications that can do it, like Houdah Geo. I'm also using Houdah Geo to tag my photos, and it is working well with Photos for Mac.

That is working much better for me, than pairing the Lumix with my iPhone and draining the batteries in both devices in just a few hours.

You could also use the iPhone to record GPS tracks. But using the iPhone to record tracks is also draining the iPhone batteries quickly.
