How does Photos geo-tag photos with no location information?

Hi all, just wondering if someone could satisfy my curiosity. I do some photography with a Sony a7iii camera, that does NOT have any gps functionality. I recently noticed that some photos I had taken and dropped into Photos have been accurately geo-tagged and are showing in Places exactly where they were taken.

Has anyone any idea how this has happened? I'm slightly gobsmacked to be honest.

In hindsight, I think I manually tagged them myself.
