Facebook freezing Safari

Most of the time that I'm on Facebook using Safari on my desktop, replying to a post complete freezes Safari. I can't do anything at all and I get a chime when I click on anything in Safari. For a while, I thought the problem was another tab I usually have open and running Airtable, but I can now confirm for sure that the problem is caused by Facebook. All I can do is go to the Apple menu and force quit Safari. I don't see anything in Activity Monitor specifically saying that Safari is not responding or that there's a runaway process, but there has to be. Has anyone seen this behaviour in Safari and found the process they need to kill to avoid having to restart Safari? I use Facebook extensively in my business and it is frustrating to have written a long post on a discussion forum for my industry only to discover I can't post it.

I'm running the latest version of Catalina, with all updates current.

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

Try another browser as a test.

Firefox 10.9 or higher. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

Opera Browser 10.9 or higher. https://www.opera.com/computer?gclid=CI7J466rh8wCFRNahgod1f4BNg

SeaMonkey 10.9 or higher8. http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

Waterfox 10.8 or higher. https://www.waterfox.net/download/

You can also try Safari Technology Preview. Go to Safari/Preferences/Advanced and check Show Develop menu in menu bar. Go to the Develop menu and select Get Safari Technology Preview. Open from the Applications folder.

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply. Pastebin. https://pastebin.com/

To Find if Something is Not Responding... Use "Force Quit..."

As for Safari Not Responding... Quit Safari Manually:

If, for some reason, Safari is not responding, then to exit it, you need to escape out of Safari, and then Force Quit it

manually. You can then have full access to your computer, once more.

So...

First, Escape Out of Safari:

  1. Press: [command + tab] to exit Mail
  2. Select: Finder icon (Smiley Face)

And then, just...

Force Quit Safari

  1. Go To: Apple Menu
  2. Select: Force Quit...
  3. Select: Mail
  4. Click: Force Quit button
