"You can be reached for messages at" Unavailable

I am trying to add my number to my Macbook imessages so that I don't send imessages through my email. However, after I have added my number to my icloud several times, and have signed out and in of my icloud account, my messages app will not let me select anything for "you can be reached for messages at" other than my email. I want to send messages using my number!
