my late 2010 MacBook Pro just started acting up. my iMessage will only work if my laptop is on battery power. once I plug it in the services just dies and nothing will send and I won't get any messages.

At this point I would suggest that you run an EtreCheck report, and optionally, post it here if you want assistance in interpreting the results.

As Tesserax says, delete all the .plist files in the Clean up: section of that report & restart.
They may not fix your problem but they're at minimum just wasting resources on your Mac.
