How do I force iCloud Drive to keep certain folders downloaded on Mac?

Hi all,

is there any way to force iCloud Drive to keep certain folders permanently downloaded on my Mac?

I'm a music producer/performer, and I keep a synced folder on iCloud Drive to ensure my working files are always up to date regardless of which machine I'm on – iMac or MacBook Pro.

My understanding was that iCloud Drive would keep "heavily used" files permanently downloaded, but I recently discovered this is not the case, as my entire working folder "offloaded" from my MacBook Pro after not using it for a few days.

Almost cost me a job as I was scrambling to redownload the entire folder before I had to go live, so I'd like to be able to avoid this in the future

This is not controllable by the user.

If you need the folder always local and in a cloud, you need another service.

icloud is many wonderful things but this is not a feature

I would back all my documents up to a folder with the name, say, "Files" created in my Home folder. iCloud/iCloud Drive often doesn't think the same way users want it to. And, actually, I would not use iCloud Drive for Documents and Desktop items period except in very simple cases. For backup purposes, I'd use both an external drive and an alternative cloud, say Dropbox Plus.
