Missing Word Files

Hi all,

I have logged on to my MacBook Pro (running Mojave Version 10) and I am missing hundreds of word documents including entire folders from my desktop etc. I have no idea what I did but I am panicking. When I go to 'recent', I can see them but I get the error "This document is either deleted or not currently accessible." I have used finder to search and the trash- not in either.

In word, I often get this message Do you want to delete the document “XYZ” which was removed from iCloud on another device? Could I possibly have mass deleted the files?

Any ideas? Thank you

what changed, did you just upgrade? From what macOS?
