incorrect disk information(twice the actual size)

Upgraded to Catalina a while ago. I only have 128GB SSD, but Today I found out that It seemed to be recognized as 256GB somehow.

This problem also made Time Machine took up twice the space(>128GB).

I was trying to use Migration Assistant to transfer information to my new MacBook (also 128GB), and it would tell me that I don't have enough space.

I had tried to delete snapshots, but it didn't work.

Does anyone have any idea? Thanks!

According to the Type information for the Apple SSD, it is indeed 256GBs.


Get Correct Storage Information


Do not use the information from the Storage section of the About This Mac dialog. Ignore the Storage information as it is typically wrong. To find out the correct information for any disk: Select a Desktop disk icon. Press Command-I to open the Get Info window and look at the topmost panel displayed. You will find the disk information displayed for Capacity, Available, and Used. If you have more than one disk/partition then repeat for each one on your Desktop.


The categories found in the Storage section of About This Mac is simply an arbitrary way of displaying files on your drive. There are no such categories actually on the drive.


What is reported by Get Info? If you shutdown the computer, wait 30 seconds, reboot, then what is reported by Get Info?

What makes you believe it's incorrect? Apple SSD APO256J Media indicates that the drive identifies itself with the model number for a 256GB capacity drive. Get Info indicates there is 142.7GBs Used and 134.85GBs Available. This is borne out by the Disk Utility image that shows the drive is formatted as a 250.69GB SSD.
