I get an update notification appearing on the screen of my 27" iMac with Mojave 14.14.6. But when I go to the App Store and click on Updates it says I'm up to date. What's going on here?

Have a look in System Preferences> Software Update, System and Security updates are handled through there. And app updates are handled through App Store Updates.
