I bought a 2.5" SSD to replace the old 3.5" drive in my iMac 2008 to give it a few more years. But the SSD tis far too small for the gap left by the old drive and I obviously need a caddy of some sort. I did think of putting a couple of straps round it to secure it. Would that work?

What SSD are you using?
You need to check the spec's of that SSD and make sure that it is SATA ll 3G or backwards compatible to SATA ll 3G.
The 2008 iMac only has a SATA ll 3G drive controller and not all newer SATA lll 6G SSDs are backwards compatible to 3G.

Thanks. Very helpful. I'd wondered if the SSD might be fine just with the SATA connectors (I've already fitted it that far) and the install link you provided confirms that this is so. So leaving it 'hanging' will be my first try. If that gives my any trouble I'll buy the caddy suggested in the link.
Thanks. I'm ftting a Crucial MX500 250GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD. I've used Crucial frm many years and I'd expect that the drive is suitable.
