Are the scanned documents in PDF, or image format now? There are OCR applications that specialize in converting scanned PDF into Word documents, and there are other OCR that work on images and extract the text from those. There are several of these in the Mac App Store that are free to install. Some have in-App purchases, or quantity conversions per month before limit reached and subscription necessary for larger volume.
Search OCR in Mac App Store.

Hi Larry,
"ocr" in the search box at top right in the (Mac) App store front page brought up a full page of 90 apps, most of them OCR, and the majority free, or free with in app purchases.
Not many ratings, though.
Regards,
Barry
Determine if your goal can be achieved without the in-app purchases. Also, check the respective Mac App Store support link back to the developer's website for additional documentation, or respective application trialware.
I have tried to use PDF Reader and could not open it to convert a document. I keep receiving the following message
"Connection error"
The network is currently unavailable. Please try again later"
I have tried everything over the last two days to find a work around including their Help icon.
I guess that I need to try a different app.
I would start with the results of searching for OCR in the Mac App Store, and then choose the free applications with the highest star ratings, and the end result that you seek in their description of what the product can do. There is a link to the developer's website for these applications, and you should pursue functionality issues with them.
I think I am jinxed in finding an OCR.
D/L PDF OCR Community and attempted to use it and received error message " net work currently unavailable. Try again later. These is the second app that this message has popped up. There is nothing wrong with my local network. D/L iText but it will not open (does not appear in Tool Bar) When I tried to delete it from Application listing message states that I can not because it's open. Went to Force Quit to delete it and it doesn't appear in the list. I have to do a Restart to be able to Delete same. I D//L again with the same above results.
Am I doomed. I have always used HP OCR without a problem but I recently switched to an Epson so that HP is no longer viable.
I was hoping the OP would act on my search OCR line in my last post… a reasonably good 🧭 to those plentiful, OCR apps that you mention.
OCR applications do not work on Pages documents. They work on scanned images containing legible text though.
I guess I got the cart before the horse. It is scanned documents that I want to be able use OCR with so that I can then copy with Pages or Text Edit.
They are all PDF format. I will try to find something in Mac app store. Previously was not successful. Thanks
Thanks for the tip. I should be able to find one that is Mac intuitive and doesn't cost too much. I have found that to get full function app is generally with only additional dollars.
Will HP OCR work on existing PDF files, instead of being tied to an HP scanner?
No OCR is perfect but I do get good results with PDFPenPro. It's not inexpensive, even the non-pro version is $50 but there is a trial you can download from the developer, Smile Software.
Unfortunately No
