Family sharing- app updates

Hi, before I knew about family sharing my son would use my Apple ID for downloading apps etc. He now has his own ID and is connected to me via family sharing. Problem is that whenever he wants to update his original apps (which I don’t use) he is prompted to use my ID password and log in as me. Is there any way I can resolve this?

As a test, have him delete one little used app that has an update, and see if he can download it using his Apple ID since you now have Family Sharing set up.
