Video format not supported with Airplay

Hi there, I’m trying to watch a movie from the Apple TV app or Netflix app by mirroring my iOS device to my Xiaomi Tv via Airplay. I can mirror the screen just fine, can look at pics, video, etc. When I play the movie though it says “video format non supported”. That happens both with Apple TV and Netflix. Same if I try to use the AV adapter instead of Airplay. What’s the matter? Are video coded so that they can’t be played on a tv? Do I need to buy the Apple TV device?

  • Netflix doesn’t support AirPlay or mobile-device-to-HDMI-adapters on Apple devices anymore, since April 2019. This seems to be a decision by Netflix that was made when Apple announced AirPlay capability on third party devices (notably built-in to select models newer TVs).
  • Apple TV+ doesn’t support mobile-device-to-HDMI-adapters, as reported by several other users. Apple TV+ (and other Apple TV app Channels) may have additional security measures, different from other content that can be screen mirrored.
