Video format not supported with Airplay

Hi there, I’m trying to watch a movie from the Apple TV app or Netflix app by mirroring my iOS device to my Xiaomi Tv via Airplay. I can mirror the screen just fine, can look at pics, video, etc. When I play the movie though it says “video format non supported”. That happens both with Apple TV and Netflix. Same if I try to use the AV adapter instead of Airplay. What’s the matter? Are video coded so that they can’t be played on a tv? Do I need to buy the Apple TV device?

Netflix doesn’t support AirPlay or mobile-device-to-HDMI-adapters on Apple devices anymore, since April 2019. This seems to be a decision by Netflix that was made when Apple announced AirPlay capability on third party devices (notably built-in to select models newer TVs).
Apple TV+ doesn’t support mobile-device-to-HDMI-adapters, as reported by several other users. Apple TV+ (and other Apple TV app Channels) may have additional security measures, different from other content that can be screen mirrored.

netflix blocked airplay usage from their app, it is the right of app developers to do so

Does that apply also when you try to mirror with cable? I get the new video format cannot be streamed via wifi.

Videos would not be played either when I use my Lighting AV Adapter and HDMI cable. My iphone screen is perfectly mirrored with the cable, videos on either netflix or App TV+ it do not play though.

Ok Netflix. What about Apple TV? I don’t get why mirroring works while streaming a movie doesn’t not...?

It shouldn’t surprise you that Apple doesn’t support the Xiaomi Box. You will have to contact Xiaomi about any issues with that product. Apple has been making changes in their streaming formats (HLS as .movpkg, instead of plain .mp4), which might be a reason for your woes.
