Connecting Apple Cinema HD 30" to MacBookPro 16

To Malcom J. Rayfield.

Hi Malcom I have the same problem with connecting my MacBook Pro 16 to the Apple Cinema HD 30".

All the connection stuff you recommended was bought, but I still can't connect the external display to the Macbook. Are the connections I've made correct? Is't it necessary to use the firewire cable, that's the only cable not connected.

to connect my MP pro to the 30", I use a slightly different setup which also works:

  1. StarTech.com DisplayPort to DVI Adapter – Dual-Link – Active DVI-D Adapter for Your Monitor / Display - USB Powered – 2560x1600 (DP2DVID2) (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A493CNY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1); plus a
  2. USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter Cable Male To Female (https://www.ugreen.com/product/male_usb_c_to_female_displayport_dp_adapter-en.html)

These are just examples of where you can buy them. My Cinema DP 30"MB pro works with that setup.

But now i purchased a mini-mac and copied my MB pro setup: then the screen starts up but 70% along the way of booting up the screen, it freezes. So my mac mini with exactly the same setup as my MB pro cannot make the 30"display work?!

Any thoughts???

The Mac mini graphics is part of the Intel CPU, and behaves differently from the separate AMD GPU used on other Macs. Some display configurations that the Mac mini specs say should work (and do work on other Macs) don't work properly on the Mac mini. That your display does work initially when booting, then stops, indicates that the display and adapters are all working, and there is a software problem, probably with the Intel graphics driver. Are you running the latest Catalina (10.15.3)?

Since your Mac mini is new you can try Apple support, but they won't be too enthusiastic about supporting such an old display, and non-Apple adapters. It may be worth getting the complaint into their system, though.

I bought a Mac mini last year and was planning to use my old (2001) Apple display, but it would not work, even with the correct adapters. I ended up buying the LG UltraFine 4K Display

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HMUA2VC/A/lg-ultrafine-4k-display

and am very happy with it.

The display's FireWire cable is not used. (It's just there for the FireWire ports on the back of the display.)

The UPtab USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter plugs into one of the computer's Thunderbolt 3 ports. The UPtab's USB-C port can be used for power for the computer, but not for any other purpose.

The Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter plugs into the UPtab adapter's Mini DisplayPort, and, via a USB-C to USB-A adapter, into another port on the computer.

Does the display show in the USB section of System Information? (Option-click the at the top-left of the display.)

Does it show in the Graphics/Displays section?

Do the display's USB ports work?

dear Mr Malcolm: I have purchased a mini-mac and copied my MB pro setup (which does connect properly to my 30"): then with the mini mac the 30" screen starts up but 70% along the way of booting up the screen, it freezes. So my mac mini with exactly the same setup as my MB pro cannot make the 30"display work?! Any thoughts?? I am trying to send a picture here but I cannot upload my picture.
