Video created as MOV despite choosing "most compatible" (expecting MP4)

Hi,

I am wondering why my videos are created as MOV files (expecting MP4) even though i have chosen 'most compatible format' and i am not using highest resolution, to avoid being forced to use "high efficiency".

Anyone has similar problem? Hope i will not have to reset my iphone ... but let's see.

Thanks in advance

Hi mikulas80,

As a test, I would suggest you go to Settings > Camera on your iPhone and set the option to Record Video at 1080p at 60 fps.

In the Formats settings, choose Most Compatible. The Most Compatible setting will use JPEG/H.264. When these videos are shared, any device (Android or Apple) should be able to open and play them.

Enjoy your day!

Good afternoon mikulas80,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you wondering why your videos are created as .mov files instead of .mp4 files. Are you asking about when you capture video on your iPhone or when you are exporting from iMovie for iOS or another app? The .mov files are the most compatible for Apple software. When you export a video project from iMovie or Final Cut Pro X on a Mac, the resulting file is a .mov file unless you specifically choose iOS devices.

How are you planning to use these video files? Who is your intended audience to view them?

Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices

"Though capturing in HEIF and HEVC format is recommended, you can set these devices to capture media using the older formats, which are more broadly compatible with other devices and operating systems:

  1. Go to Settings > Camera.
  2. Tap Formats.
  3. Tap Most Compatible. This setting is available only on devices that can capture media in HEIF or HEVC format, and only when using iOS 11 or later.
  4. All new photos and videos will now use JPEG or H.264 format. To return to using the space-saving HEIF and HEVC formats, choose High Efficiency."

Hi i_rina,

I have change settings already 3 weeks ago as you have suggested. That is why i am still wondering why .mov files are created and not older format H.264 format (mp4).

I am asking about captured videos. I sync my library with google photos and share it with my friends with androids phones.

But they cannot play it as it is .mov file and not mp4.

I would presume that by choosing "most compatible", my video will be automatically created as mp4.

Why it is not happening?

Thanks Mikulas80

Hi jeremy_v,

I havr already exactly such settings set. As you have suggested. And my friends cannot play video when they download it from google photos library where i share it. Because it is.mov.

I feel like i am going in circles here with this...

Simple question: if i have chosen most compatible, should i expect mp4 movie file or mov file to be created???

Thank you for yes or no answer in advance.
