can I add a child account to my ipad mini 4

I am trying to create an apple id for my son, so that I can set up a family share account under my apple id (which his ipad is currently set up under). However there doesn't seem to be any instructions online (that I can find) that specifically relate to the iPad mini (4th gen), and I cannot access anything under settings-<my name>. (my name is grayed out). The latest update on the mini is OS 13.3.1.

Thank you!

It should appear in the account screen at the top of the Settings App.

However, if you say its grayed out, its likely because you have restrictions in place to disable making changes to it.

Go to Settings->Screen Time->Content & Privacy Restrictions->Account Changes, and make sure its set to Allow.

There are no specific instructions for an iPad mini 4th gen, because there is nothing specific about it. The instructions apply to any iPad.

You need to use Family Sharing to create an Apple ID for a child either on the iPad, or another device that is signed in to your Apple ID: Family Sharing and Apple ID for your child - Apple Support

Then sign in using that Apple ID to the 4 different places on the iPad that use the Apple ID: Sign in with your Apple ID - Apple Support

For your greyed out name, have you checked Settings/Screen Time for any restrictions?

Do you have access to another WiFi network where you can try? That has worked for several people.

Right, except the Family Sharing option doesn't show up on my ipad. And the "add account" option under settings-->passwords&accounts is grayed out, so I can't add his own apple id there.

I only have the one functional apple device at the moment (my old ipad mini 2 the screen is broken, so I can't access anything on that one), so I don't want to have to remove and reset my apple id on this device, because I don't have another one to provide the access codes. (Despite having set up an email address and cell phone, it never sends me the verification codes to my phone). I access itunes etc. from a pc or android otherwise.

He wants to be able to use a fingerprint ID to open his ipad, but even if we set that up with both his and my fingerprints, it causes the touch ID to override the need to use a password to purchase apps.
