Deleted POP emails have started to reappear on iPad2

I use POP email on my iPad2 and have done so for some years.

When I delete emails I then select those in the Rubbish folder and delete all.

Since late January or early February mail messages that I have deleted reappear after a period of time.

I notice this as I'm deleting further emails and trying to empty the deleted folder which can be some hours later or the next day.

Up to yesterday those emails dated from the 4th week in January.

I went into an Apple store and was told to bring the iPad in so the Apple bod could check a setting which she claimed would resolve the issue.

When I took the iPad in I was told they couldn't help me and I'd need to contact support.

On attempting to contact support online it seems my iPad is too old for complimentary support.

Deleted Messages in Settings was set to remove after 1 week but I always clear the Rubbish folder immediately after deleting from the Inbox.

Yesterday I reset the iPad and set it up again from scratch.

Having configured my POP mail account yesterday I've found the problem is back again today so I've gone backwards because a couple of the apps I had won't load because it says they need iOS 10 which isn't available for iPad2.

I use POP on my iPhone7 (iOS 13.3.1) and do not have the problem there.

I do not want to switch to IMAP.

Any suggestions?

If using POP3 to manage your mailbox, you’ll need to check your settings. POP3 mail clients can manage incoming mail in two different ways:

  • Download and Delete from server
  • Download and leave a copy on the server

If you select the former, as your Mail App (client) downloads mail from the email server, the server copy is immediately deleted. Any other email client will not be able to retrieve the messages already downloaded.

If selecting the latter, as your Mail client downloads mail from the server, a copy of the message remains on the server. Download by other email clients remains possible as messages are still available for download.

Your Mail App, when operating as a POP3 client, may only be deleting its local copy of downloaded messages. As such, if messages are not deleted during download, they may be retrieved from the server during a subsequent download.

By contrast, IMAP operates differently - effectively synchronising the email server with what you see locally. New email is downloaded from the server to the client; when a message is deleted, it is deleted both locally and from the server. Other email clients, accessing the same mailbox, are synchronised with the server.

I hope you find this to be helpful in guiding diagnosis of your setup.

May or may not be relevant to the issue...

I'm finding that selecting the Mailboxes option when checking the status of Inbox and Rubbish after going through a delete action is frequently causing the mail app to hang.

I've tried leaving in that state and it doesn't change.

The only way I've been able to resolve is to use the Home button to display the running apps and then close the mail app.

Following that navigation is normal.

All emails deleted since the device was reset continue to come back following a Delete All action in Rubbish but not every time.

To avoid any misunderstanding...

I have 3 email devices:-

1) iPad2      with iOS 9.3.5 which is the latest available for the device

2) iPhone7 with iOS 13.3.1 which again is the latest available for the device

3) Windows desktop

Mail on the Apple devices is only used to briefly screen new emails when away from the desktop - hence the POP setup.

Typically I would read emails on those devices responding only if absolutely necessary and when doing so would BCC myself so my response ends up on the server and is available to the desktop.

I would then Delete All from Inbox and Sent, open Rubbish and Delete All there also.

Both Apple devices are configured to Never Delete from server.

Both Apple devices are configured to Remove Deleted Messages after 1 Day although I always remove manually.

Mail management is carried out on the desktop where the configuration uses IMAP.

There I read all server emails, move to local folders on the desktop if I need to retain and then clear the server by deleting anything left and clearing the Deleted folder.

I check all IMAP folders at least daily to make sure they have been cleared.

In practice I would never expect to have more than a half dozen emails on the server at any point in time.

I have verified the server status using Webmail connectivity and am certain that the mail client on my desktop correctly reflects the server.

I use all 3 devices on a typical day and make sure they are as up to date as possible.

The issue only presents on the iPad device although the iPhone is configured in the same way and mail handling is identical on both.

Following a reset of the iPad the issue remains with all emails deleted on the device since the reset reappearing on at least a daily basis.

The reappearance of previously deleted emails seems to be triggered by the deletion of emails from Inbox - I check Rubbish before clearing Inbox to confirm it is empty.

Deleted emails do not reappear every time I delete from Inbox but when they do all emails deleted on the iPad since the reset seem to be included.
