Apple Watch faced popped up

My Apple watch was charging when I went to take it off the charger I noticed that the face had popped up. I put in an online repair order. I then spoke with someone from who told me that I needed to pay $200+ dollars and send in my watch for repair. I asked why should I pay money and was told....just it case there is a cost. I asked him why would I need to pay for a repair that was not caused by me but a malfunction of the battery in this watch. So I’m trying to figure out, since I’ve read many inquiries on the internet about this happening to the Apple Watch, why would Apple want to charge its customers up front for a malfunction caused by Apple.

Apple does not make the batteries that are in the Apple Watch. It isn't uncommon for lithium polymer batteries when they totally fail to expand. It is not a manufacturing defect it is from battery usage. If in your case when you send it in they find a defect on the logic board that cause the battery to fail they won't charge you, if they don't they will. If this is a Generation 1 or Series 1 Watch I wouldn't pay to repair it, I would get a newer model.
