Failed to open a session on the 'device"

I purchased a new IMAC in November 2019. OS 10.15.3. Neat Scanner ND-1000.

Downloaded neat software. Unable to scan. When I click on SCAN message "Failed to open a session on the device". How do I open a session? Please advise
