AppleMail with Gmail 2FA

I've enabled 2FA, unwisely?, and I am now locked out of AppleMail.

It keeps saying 'Enter the password for the account “xxx@gmail.com”./Google requires completing authentication in Safari.'

When I click on Open Safari it does just that with the existing tabs, but no more. If I then open Gmail in a new tab it opens fine, but with no clue as to what to do about AppleMail.

Going through the Google help steps leads to https://support.google.com/accounts/troubleshooter/3178296?hl=en#ts=3178241%2C3141880%2C3150022

and the 'app password option is not available as I'm on Mojave - and also locked out with iOS.

The obvious solution if to switch off 2FA, but that's a bit defeatist!
