External apps that make changes to an image will not carry on to Photos

If I edit an image in Photos with an external app, the changes will not carry on to Photos, which gives an error message that the changes will not be made.

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.15

One must save the image with the same extension as the original. For example if you use Photoshop Elements to edit a photo from within Photos you can't save it as a .psd file. It must be flattened and saved as the same file format as the original.


What extension and app are you using to edit the photos? Are you going thru the Open In menu as shown here or some other method?
