One of the main reasons I purchased the series 5 was its ECG function - I have a heart condition and was excited to be able to monitor it conveniently - but now I discover that it does not work in certain countries - why would apple do this? Do some countries not need this function? If it saves lives why would you limit its use? I am flummoxed!

Actually Apple has not officially released any of the watch series in Zimbabwe - and the ECG is a function of only 4 & 5 plus it does not function as an ECG unless the app is activated in that country. So the watch could be released and then ECG app activated once the gvt allows it. _ It is up to Apple as far as I can see?
Unfortunately, I have the same problem. I am frustrated as well when I discovered that it will not be available. As previously mentioned, you will have to wait for the government to approve it.
If Apple has an official presence in Zimbabwe then they probably already started the process. But they don't run the government.
As mentioned above Apple must allow the release of the series 5 watch in Zimbabwe - it has been released in South Africa but not yet in Zimbabwe - I wish I knew why.
I live in Zimbabwe so it may take a while before Apple gets around to my part of the world - at least there will be many reference countries by then.

The reason it doesn't work in some countries is because when the ECG app is functional the watch becomes a medical device and because of this the government of every country has to approve the ECG app before it accepted for use in that country.
It is not up to your apple agent,your country's government have to approve the ECG app.
Because the government of Zimbabwe haven't approved the ECG app for use in Zimbabwe.Contact the health department in your country and ask them why.
