iPhone does not change time automatically.

I paste a post below from another user in 2018. Like him or her and the 331 other users who selected “me too”, I have the same exact problem in the same exact location, going from EST to CST, time changes, and, coming back from CST to EST, it does not. Overslept an hour the next morning because forgot to manually force it to change. I.e., it’s now about 10 hours later, and, it still hasn’t changed the time back to Eastern time zone. The problem is repeatable and recurring apparently happens on different model iPhones. The previous user already received all the standard replies about checking all the time and date settings, tried that and it doesn’t work. This is an Apple IOS problem!

“I have an iPhone X and my wife has an iPhone 8 Plus. We live in Tallahassee (EST) and travel quite frequently to our daughter's home in Crestview (CST). When we drive TO Crestview our phones switch time automatically as they should. However, when we come back to Tallahassee they do not switch back to EST. We have tried all possible settings in the phones and nothing works unless we MANUALLY change them back after arriving home in Tallahassee. Is there a solution to where we don't have to do this manually each & every time we make this drive (several times per month)?”

Hi, flcontrol.

I'm glad you decided to reach out on Apple Support Communities. I was sorry to read about your oversleeping the morning after your travels. I rely on my iPhone as an alarm clock to get my day started, too, so I can empathize with being woken later than anticipated.

From your details, it looks like you’re using an iPhone 8. What is the iOS version on your device? If you haven’t already, I would start by ensuring that your iPhone is updated.

Then, you mentioned the standard troubleshooting in the thread that you’re referencing, but only specifically checking your date and time settings. What other steps have you tried? A couple of basic steps that may help are:

  • Reset Network Settings and Reset Location & Privacy as outlined here:

Return iPhone settings to their defaults

When you have your time zone set to automatically change, the current time is governed by your cellular connection. Resetting your network settings will refresh that connection. Your location and privacy settings allow your iPhone to adjust your time zone at Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Set Time Zone. Resetting this will also refresh that connection. Keep in mind that these resets will return you to default settings, so you’ll have to re-enter your Wi-Fi, VPN, or other MDM details. You’ll also see the apps and processes on your iPhone start requesting access again.

If none of these options seem to work for you, I would make a note of whether you are roaming or connected to your wireless network and whether it seems to happen in all locations when you move from Central to Eastern time zones, or only in one specific location, and contact your carrier for suggestions.

Best Regards.
