How can I add mp3s to my iPod Classic 3rd gen without using iTunes?

iTunes wants to format the iPod before I can add songs to it and the iPod is full of songs which I want to listen to (there is 4gb of free space on the iPod). Is there a way to add and be able to play mp3s on the iPod without iTunes?
