Use of Feedback Assistsant by non Beta users

On another thread it was discussed that Feedback Assistant can be used by people who are neither beta testers nor Developers. Some users say they have done so with no problems.

When I try it says ...

Is there anything else I can do apart from pretending to be a Beta Tester?

All one has to do is read the license agreement of the Feedback Assistant to understand its restricted intentions. It is exclusively for use by only those in the following categories which Apple deems "Seed" program membership:

  1. Participants in an Apple customer seed program
  2. The Apple beta program
  3. Apple Developer program

Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.

A. License. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, you are granted a limited non-exclusive license to install and use the Apple Software on compatible Apple-branded products you own or control during the term of this License for purposes of providing Apple with diagnostic, technical, usage and related logs and information about your computer, device, hardware, system and application software, and peripherals (“Your System”) in connection with your participation in Apple’s Customer Seed Program, the Apple Beta Program, and/or the Apple Developer Program (collectively, “Seed Program”) as part of your evaluation of how Apple pre-release software and/or hardware provided to you under the Seed Program performs on Your System. You may not use this Apple Software if you are not a member of a Seed Program. You may make only as many internal use copies of the Apple Software as reasonably necessary to use the Apple Software as permitted under this License; provided that you reproduce on each copy of the Apple Software or portion thereof, all copyright or other proprietary notices contained in the original. This license does not grant you the right to use the Apple Software for any other purpose, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers or devices at the same time. Except as expressly set forth herein, no other rights or licenses are granted or to be implied under any Apple intellectual property.

That's very interesting. Apple's bug reporter used to be open to anyone. All you had to have was a free developer account. Do you have one of those? Unfortunately, all of my accounts are somehow associated with paid developer accounts so I can't really test this. I tried to find a link to the free developer account, but I wasn't successful. I might not be able to find such a thing since my Apple IDs all have developer accounts.

However, this page https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/ explicitly says you can join the public beta program to get access to Feedback Assistant. I don't know how that works though.

Yes thanks. I read it and accepted it. But as I am in none of the three categories I cannot add a "New Feedback".

I wasn't expecting to be able to and these responses just confirmed that.

It was a member in the 79 page Catalina Crashes thread that said I could.

Sorry only had 2 "helpfuls" to pick

I use to be a public beta tester for Catalina, but I'm back on public releases now. Feedback Assistant still remains on my Mac for whatever reason and it seems like I can still submit reports. I noticed that if I start a new report, there isn't a section asking for what build I am in or what build I experienced the issue. I don't know if that has to do with the app evolving or it knows that I am not on a beta version anymore.

"....FWIW, the Feedback Assistant is for those doing beta testing. It would make little sense to allow it for normal feedback....."

That sums up my feelings 100%. And thanks for all the other comments thus far. I think joining the Beta program for no real reason (or as often just to get the newest thing) is misleading statistically for Apple. It must look like "a million Beta testers and no bugs reported!"

I'll leave the thread wide open and unmarked for a while and mean time carry on with Apple.com/feedback

Ironically I only experienced and reported two bugs in iOS13 and they were both fixed, and Catalina has been bug free for me. I don't necessariluy like all the changes and it kept my knees warm for a while, but nothing I would call a "bug".

FYI, the FA is also used by other beta testers, not just the "public" beta. There is also the "by invitation only" beta testing program which provides private discussion areas. The problem with the public beta is that testers are not allowed to discuss it anywhere and have no interaction with anyone at Apple, so they are literally on their own. Personally, I would never participate in a public beta.

I can't test it because i am registered with Apple, so the link obviously works for me. But, I know it will only work if you are (or were) registered as a participant. I read through the last couple of pages of the "super" thread and I do not know how the person could have submitted official feedback with the FA unless they are still automatically registered even though they stopped participating.
