Phone rings at normal volume twice, then rings at low volume.

My Iphone 11Pro rings loudly on the first two rings. On the third and subsequent rings, it rings so softly that I can barely hear it even though I am right next to it.

I don't see anything in the settings menu that would allow me to change this.

This started recently, maybe 2 months ago. Sometimes if I reboot the phone, it will go back to ringing normally. But the problem returns within a day or so.

I am a transplant patient and need to take calls from the hospital at any hour. I am afraid that I may miss an important call because of this.

If anybody can help me restore normal ringing I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Andy, it is NOT the touch that drives the ringer volume low. It is when you LOOK at it. It is when your face and eyes gets into the camera housing range. Call the iPhone while you are far from the iPhone (Not looking at it or standing over it). Call it five times and it should ring loud each time until it gets to voicemail and stops.

If you are still NOT comfortable after the above test then you can shut this feature OFF.

Go to Settings-->>Accessibility-->>Face ID & Attention and turn the Attention Aware Features to OFF. This will ensure that the iPhone will ring at the level that you have set and like. Thanks.

Axel, I just tested it again and it seems that you are correct. Only if I pick it up or look at it, it rings quietly. Otherwise it stays loud for 5 rings before going to voicemail. Thanks for helping me out here. I read the entire Iphone manual section on phone operation and saw no mention of this.

Thanks again!

Hi Andy,

Question - Does your iPhone's ringer volume go low right after you pick it up to answer it and while you are looking at the screen to identify the caller? If this is the case then it is normal behavior for the iPhone.

The theory behind this is that there is an incoming call. The iPhone rings at the highest volume set by the user. Once the user picks up the iPhone and looks at the screen then the ringer drops the volume because there is no sense in ringing loud when the user already knows about the call and the iPhone is in his/her hands.

Test an incoming call on your iPhone and let it go to voicemail. See whether the iPhone maintains the volume until the call goes to voicemail. Then test a second incoming call and pick up the iPhone and look at the screen then the volume will be lower.

Axel, Thanks for your reply.

I have been testing it tonight. It is inconsistent. I lay the phone on the tabletop and call it from another phone (our landline, or my wife's Iphone). I do not touch it. Sometimes it will ring loudly until it goes to voicemail. Other times, it will ring loudly until it announces the caller's name (my name, I am using our landline), other times, it announces the name but rings softly. It does this without my ever touching it. I am afraid to depend on this phone because it is unpredictable and I could easily miss a call unless I stay within a foot or so of it at all times.
