Weird location for AirPods on find my device?!?

Just had something weird happen and wonder if anyone could explain this, I will try to keep this brief. I have AirPods, first release, and I lost them the other day, I had them on my find my device app on my iPhone, so when I looked for my AirPods on my find my device app, it showed a location, about 8 miles from where I am staying, that I had never driven through or visited, I had visited a store about a mile and a half from the location it was showing on my app, and driven past the neighborhood on a main road, about a 1/2 mile from the location showing on the app. But was never at the exact location, which showed a persons residence. so I knocked on the door, and the houses on both sides, no one had my AirPods, came back to where I was staying and found my AirPods behind the nightstand, eight miles from the location showing on the find my device app, now I understand the app only shows the last location the AirPods where used/opened, but I never was in that neighborhood, wonder if anyone ever had a similar experience?

Thanks in advance

Joe

Find my shows the position the phone belived it had when the airpods were last connected. (there is no way to track the airpods by themselves)

Sometimes when the phone does not have a good GPS lock it can go for cellular localisation or WIFI based.

So what I think happned here is that the location of your phone was a bit(way) off when the airpods were last connected to them. Causing the last known location of the airpods to be off aswell

Hope this clears up what happened
