Heart rate metric run

Why is heart rate metric not available (greyed out) in outdoor run and walk? Articles seem to suggest that I should be able to select this. Is there some other setting that is making this unavailable?

Sounds like power saving mode may be on. The setting is in the Apple Watch app on your phone under My Watch > Workout

Swipe up on the watch face then tap on the battery percentage number and slide on power reserve mode to turn it off.
