I left something out of my narrative in my earlier reply. Please go by this account. It is complete and accurate:
I attempted this but it did not take. I plugged my iPod Shuffle into a MacBook Air running macOS High Sierra version 10.13.6. It opened iTunes version 12.8.2.3. I clicked the little iPod Shuffle icon in the header bar and it opened a settings panel.
Under options, Manually manage music was checked in a blue check box. Under that the choice "Enable disk use" was also checked, but it was dimmed out. I unchecked Manually manage music and this caused the Enable disk use to un-dim and a checkmark to appear next to it in a blue box. I clicked Done, removed my iPod Shuffle and transferred it to my MacBook Air running Catalina. The iPod again appeared as a standard hard disk icon in the Finder. When I opened the Music app, it was not there. When I opened the Podcast app, it was not there. I unplugged the iPod Shuffle and plugged it back in to the MacBook Air running High Sierra. I saw that the settings panel was now back to its original state with the Manually manage music checkbox checked and the Enable disk use checked but dimmed. I repeated the process (unchecked Manually manage music) and the Enable disk use checkbox was automatically checked. I unchecked the checkbox and this left all the checkboxes unchecked. This time I clicked the Apply button at the bottom of the panel and the checkboxes went back to their original state. Manually manage music checked and Enable disk use checked but dimmed. I can't figure out how to make the unchecked state of the Enable disk use box endure. In other words I am unable to uncheck Enable disk use and make it stick. Can you advise me how to accomplish this so I may once again be able to use my iPod Shuffle. If this is impossible, do you know of any third party software that will allow me to load content from my laptop to my iPod Shuffle? Thank you for your assistance.
