How can I prevent the annoying password screen after inactivity?

Starting in 10.15, security has gone full nutcase. After some period of inactivity (I don't know how much, since I'm always asleep when it happens), I'll wake the screen and find I have to enter my password to unlock the screen of my still logged in user. This is annoying and 100% unnecessary. Every setting that should control this is turned off, yet it persists.

How do I make it stop that. This is a Mac Pro. It doesn't go anywhere, so having to enter my password in this case is totally stupid.

Ok since you have tried all 'require password' settings you should list them.

did you check System Preferences> Security & Privacy> General> Advanced

make sure Logout after xx minutes of inactivity.

It could be a corrupt preference file.

Click on Finder, click on Go To Folder enter the following,

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

press Go

A new Finder window will open with the file highlighted, move it to the Trash.

Don't empty the Trash yet. Restart your Mac. Open System Preferences and set

all your require password settings again. Restart your mac. Now run your mac

until it sleeps or the screensaver starts, give it some time then see if you still need a

password to gain access to the mac.

About the bug report, no point telling us, you are just in touch with other users.

If there was a real problem then you would see a lot more references to it in these communities.

So when you moved the preference file to the trash and then restarted your mac did you then open System Preferences and set your options that no password is required on waking from sleep or screensaver and then restarted your mac. And then test to see if it will allow you to wake without passwords.

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and then rebooting.

Also try setting up another user account (Administrator), make sure settings are for no password required, and test again, this should determine whether the problem is global or just in your primary user account.

Do you have any third party apps installed that could influence the settings on your mac.

My install of Catalina wakes from sleep or screensaver without the need for passwords.

Of course.

As for the safe boot, since it can sometimes take a few days for the problem to rear its ugly head, I won't know if it's fixed for a while.

Yes, "Logout after…" is off.

The com.apple.systempreferences.plist looks fine, at least it reads fine with the defaults command. I'll try moving it out to see. It might take a few days for the problem to appear.

I know it's just users here. Referencing a bug report doesn't hurt though, in case others also report it and want to mention it. That's how we developers do things.

I mean it's random and only happens sometimes. I said "After some period of inactivity". It can happen the very next time the screensaver automatically engages (such as happened earlier in the thread), or it can take days before it happens, where the screensaver has engaged dozens of times automatically and manually. I must have explained this in the previous thread I authored (which got no useful replies and the server annoyingly aged it out so no more replies could be added) and forgot to do so again in this one.

Nope, a safe boot did not clear out the problem. When I left it last night, the screensaver kicked in after a while, then the screen slept, and I don't know if the computer itself slept or not (probably, since I don't have it being a Retrospect server any more since I got rid of that junk and switched to Time Machine, and it wasn't doing any other sort of processing, and "Prevent computer from sleeping" is off, and Power Nap is on), but around 12 hours later when I came, I had to enter my password on the lock screen.
