Trust request error 0XE8000003

Equipment description: iMac: Oct 2015, 27” 5K display, Fusion HD, OS 10.15.3 and an iPhone Xs Max: iOS 13.3..

Everything has been running fine on both devices, no new software recently added to either.

Today, when I connected my iPhone to my iMac in order to do an encrypted backup to my iMac, after selecting Trust this computer and entering the iPhone's 6-digit passcode then clicking the big Trust button on the iMac, I got Trust request error 0xE8000003.

I rebooted the iMac and iPhone, tried again, got the same error.

I did a hard restart of the iPhone, tried again, got the same error.

I logged out and then logged into an untouched Test account on my iMac, tried again, got the same error.

I booted the iMac from a 3-day old clone, tried again, got the same error.

I then attached the iPhone to myMacBook Pro: (Retina, Mid 2012), 15”, macOS 10.14.6, tried again, and it connected perfectly and I did an encrypted backup to that computer.

I did a safe boot of my iMac and was surprised to see that the iPhone did not show up in the Finder window.

I tried different USB ports, got the same error.

At this URL, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202778 I found this advice:

If the above steps don't help, go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you’ve used before.

I also found a thread on Apple Support...

...full of nuclear options like restoring the iPhone to factory settings.

Help! Please?

Hi Room101A,

I understand that when you connect your iPhone to your iMac you're seeing an "0xE" error. I see that you've done some great troubleshooting so far and have isolated the behavior to your iMac; I appreciate you including these details, they're most helpful. Based on the steps you've taken so far; I'd suggest reviewing the following information and reaching out to Apple using the included link:

"If you use a Mac

    1. Connect your iOS or iPadOS device and make sure that it's unlocked and on the Home screen.
    2. On your Mac, hold down the Option key, click the Apple menu, and choose System Information or System Report.
    3. From the list on the left, select USB.
    4. If you see your iPhone, iPad, or iPod under USB Device Tree, get the latest macOS or install the latest updates. If you don't see your device or still need help, contact Apple Support.

"

If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

Best Regards.

Thanks so much for chiming in and offering advice.

My iMac and iPhone XS Max are both running the latest version of iOS and macOS.

Yes, following your instructions I see that my iMac sees my iPhone but the iMac continues to throw out the  0XE8000003 error.

OTOH, my late 2012 MacBook Pro continues to trust both my iPad 4 Mini and my iPhone XS Max.

With my iPhone plugged into my Anker powered USB hub, I got these results.

I unplugged the iPhone from the Anker hub and using a different USB cable plug, plugged it into the iMac Keyboard, with these results:

I then plugged the iPhone directly into the USB port on the rear of the iMac and got these results:

I went to the URL link at the bottom of your response and am about to disconnect all peripherals and try again before contacting Apple Support as you recommended.

Many thanks again for your help.
