See Set up iCloud on an iOS device, iPadOS device, Mac, or Windows computer https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/set-up-icloud-mmfc0f1e2a/1.0/icloud/1.0

See especially the section entitled Set up iCloud for the first time

You will then see:

  • On your iOS or iPadOS device: Go to Settings, tap “Sign in to your [device]”, enter your Apple ID and password, then turn on the features you want to use.
  • On your Mac: Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then do one of the following:
  • macOS Catalina 10.15: Click Apple ID, enter your Apple ID and password, then turn on the features you want to use.
  • macOS 10.14 or earlier: Click iCloud, enter your Apple ID and password, then turn on the features you want to use.

Hi Eric and all.

I followed the instructions in this article on deleting entire contact file on iphone:

https://www.iphonelife.com/content/how-to-easily-delete-all-contacts-iphone

there were a few snafus toward the later stages of the instructions but i persevered.

Then, managed to move my contacts folder from my laptop to the iphone but cannot remember how.

All is well now. Kind of bumbled my way thru. Wish i had taken notes so this could be more useful to others.
