"Ethernet cable unplugged"

My ethernet connection stopped working some time ago. I have been using wifi instead as haven't had time to investigate the issue further. Network preferences says the network cable is unplugged.

  • It is not a cable issue - have tested
  • All other wired devices on my LAN network are connected and receiving internet
  • Have run diagnostics command-D - no issues
  • Have tested on other accounts - no ethernet connection
  • Have tested on recovery boot - no ethernet connection
  • Am unable to update to Catalina right now due to 3rd party software incompatibility issues

Is this a hardware issue?
