magic mouse2 has a usb connector that doesn't fit the USB port on the MacBook Pro. what adapter to use?

A simple USB-A female to USB-C male adapter should work. I bought mine for $1.50 at a place called Daiso. Apple has this:


USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple


These are the ones I got. This is a 10 pack sold online, but they're $1.50 sold individually at stores in the US.

Or you could just charge with a USB-C to Lightning cable.
