open iphone backup to retrieve pictures either using MAC or windows PC

I used to backup my iphone using itunes on my mac. After upgrading to Catalina, itunes is not supported anymore. I need to open my iphone backup to copy the pictures. I can find the backup directory where there are subfolders named from 00 to ff and four files info.plist, manifest.plist, status.plist and manifest.db.

How can I retrieve the pictures using my macbook?

I downloaded itunes to a windows PC and copied the iphone backup folder, but still don't know how to open this backup.

Please advice a solution either using the mac or the windows PC.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, dinaLLN.

I'm glad you decided to reach out on Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you’re attempting to retrieve a backup on your Mac after upgrading to macOS Catalina.

The good news is that you can use Finder to do the maintenance that you used iTunes to complete. Connect your iPhone to your computer like you used to, only this time open Finder and click on your iPhone in the sidebar. This article explains: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

To address your other concerns, you won’t be able to open an iPhone backup to retrieve photos (or any other content) on your computer. The files are compressed and only open on another iOS device. You also wouldn’t be able to use a PC to open a backup made on a Mac, or vice versa, because the operating systems are much different.

Hopefully using Finder to manage your backups will work for you!

Best Regards.
