Apple TV remote disconnects

Thanks for the advice.
It turns out, however, that it was the old dog chewed remote that was causing the problem. After unplugging the Apple TV for a short time, on restarting it the new remote connected, but if a button on the old remote was pushed the connection immediately went to the old remote and the new one needed pairing again.
We have now moved the old remote far away (keeping it in case the dog gets the new one) and all is fine with the new remote.
Better advice and instructions would have helped but thanks to the community for your input.

Get New Batteries - Use them:
Have you swapped out the batteries in the remote control for new ones? If not, I recommend you do so.
