MacBook Pro sound with a Bluetooth Speaker

Hi,

I have a 13" MacBook Pro and I'm going to buy a soundbar that I will connect via bluetooth to the Mac. Before buying it, I'm testing this system with a JBL bluetooth speaker (JBL GO 2) so the configuration is the same.

The sound is not bad, but I have noticed that the sound is a bit distorted, especially for the high frequencies (imagine it as a too high volume). I think it's a MacBook problem because when I connect the iPhone or iPad to the same speaker the sound is perfect (obviously the highest quality I can get from this speaker).

How can I solve this issue? I would like to obtain the maximum quality from the soundbar when I'll buy it.

Could the problem be the fact that this speaker has an internal microphone?

Notice: In audio settings I selected "Output: JBL Speaker" and "Input: MacBook Pro Speaker".

Thanks!

Hey there Valerio5,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand audio from your Mac doesn’t sound as expected when playing through a Bluetooth speaker. I’ll be happy to help with this.

Good job isolating the issue by testing different devices. To verify, does the issue occur with all audio? Does it happen with audio from TV shows, movies, or podcasts as well as music?

You mentioned your speaker has a mic. The steps in this link may tell you more about issues you experience with that:

If sound quality is reduced when using Bluetooth headphones with your Mac

If it only happens with songs, does adjusting the Playback preferences in Music have any impact on this? This link can help you test:

Change Playback preferences in Music on Mac

If not, see if this happens in a new user account to further isolate this issue:

Let me know if this helps.

I have some news: I was looking to some videos of people which have the same problem of "crackling speaker" (not exactly the same problem of a bluetooth speaker but, in general, crackling speaker). I have seen a video of a guy which tells to open the native Midi app and change the frequency format of the output.

If I open this app I have only 2 frequency for JBL GO 2 (see the picture) and I think that the first works when microphone is on (16-bit) and with this I get a really horrible sound; the second frequency is the one with the crackling but good sound.

Now, the 48 kHz has 2 channels and if I get one of them to zero, I have a good sound without crackling but, obviously, I have a lower volume.

I don't know if this thing can help to solve my problem.

Thanks!

Hi PsyDye!

First of all, thank you so much for your help.

I've done everything you told me to try, but unfortunately the problem is still present.

As I said in my first post, it's a little problem: I mean the sound isn't absolutely horrible. But if I listen to music from Mac or from other devices, I can ear this little difference.

To answer you, I have this problem listening to Spotify, so I can't try to change settings of the native music app. However, the problem is present also if I listen to YouTube video or TV shows on the internet.

If I have to give an opinion about that, it's more like an equalization problem. I have good presence of low frequencies (even if they are better with the other devices) and little crackling in the high frequencies. I underline the fact that it's like an equalization problem, but I don't think this is the problem because I didn't change anything, so the equalization is flat.

Thank you again!

Hi sarah_s1!

Thank you too for the help.

As you suggested me, I've tested another Bluetooth Speaker (the Anker Soundcore Boost) and I still have the same problem. I tried to use only 1 channel as I have done for the JBL GO 2 and, again, it seems to sound good. Actually, due to the increased power of this speaker compared to the JBL, maybe the problem is present also with only 1 channel on. So, I don't know if the problem is still present in the JBL too, but maybe I can't ear it.

By the way, even if the 1 channel could solve the problem, I can't opt to use this solution because now this speaker has the 2 speakers (Right and Left) far from each other so, unlike the JBL, I can obviously ear that the sound come from 1 speaker only; so it will be horrible with the soundbar.

Thanks again, I think I'll contact the support.

Hi Valerio5

Thanks for providing those details. Have you checked for a firmware update to your Bluetooth speaker or tested it with another device to see if the issue continues there? If possible, test another Bluetooth speaker with your Mac as well and see if the issue continues.

If that doesn’t help, open System Preferences  > Bluetooth and hover the pointer over the device you want to remove, then click the X button that appears next to the device's name. Connect the device once more with the steps here:

Connect a Bluetooth device with your Mac

If you continue to have issues after that, reach out to Apple Support at the following link to look further into this with you:
