Apple Mail (macOS and IOS) - No Sender No Subject

Every day I get multiple messages in Apple Mail. On the summary screen they say (No sender) (No subject). Sometimes clicking through will show the full message, sometimes not.

This happens on macOS on two different laptops (one Catalina, one Mojave), an iPhone X (IOS 13.3.1) and an iPad (IOS 13.3.1). The Mojave machine just has blank entries on the summary screen instead of saying No Sender No Subject.

Usually, I can read the message on one device which shows it normally on the summary screen, but the device that works is different for different messages.

I have tried rebooting and updating software on all devices, but no luck.

In case it might be some 3rd party software on both machines causing the problem download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine the root of the problem.

Ran EtraCheck on one of the machines but saw nothing likely. It is hard to imagine a software problem affecting 4 different devices running three different operating systems. Also, how could anything other than the Apple software cause Apple Mail to display something wrong on the subject line when the full correct mail message is still there.

It seems like it has to be an Apple Mail bug.

I don't see any of the usual suspects in the report which is good. You do have a lot of apps at launch or running and do have some memory swap files being used. If you close some of the apps that you're not actively using you should see an improvement in performance.

Go to the Clean Up section of the report and remove the orphaned files. They are just taking up space on your drive.

The fact that the problem occurs on two Macs with different systems and setups suggests that the problem lies in the emails themselves and not your Macs.

Are these email from people you know?

Have any of them been emails you've needed to keep and/or respond to?
