Why do I get "Enter your user name and password for the following server: Server p38-imap.mail.me.com"

This happened out of the blue. I had made no changes before this started.

I have changed my password 3 times and tried repairing the account multiple times. It works online into my icloud account and into apple. often when I get into the settings from a failed try, or when I get the notice above, the password has changed to a really long series of characters.

I don't know why the incoming and outgoing server has a p38 in front and I have tried deleting it and it doesn't fix it. Here are my settings.

Incoming:

I clicked "remember password"

I have used c*** and c***@icloud for user name.

I am using port 993 for incoming

I am using SSL/TLS

I clicked "Require logon using SPA"

Outgoing:

I am using port 587 for outgoing

SSL/TLS

clicked "My outging (SMTP) server requires authentication"

I have server timeout at 1 minute.

These settings don't work in any combination I could think of.

i would appreciate any feedback.

Thank you

Windows, Windows 10

Hi Colleenhh,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today installing your iCloud email on your PC.

It sounds like you need an app specific password: Using app-specific passwords.

If you download iCloud for Windows, this won't be required: Set up and use iCloud for Windows.

Have a fantastic day!

Colleenhh,

Thanks for the further details.

Do you have the latest version of iCloud for Windows installed? Since you have Windows 10, you may need to update. See the sections under "Update your version of iCloud for Windows" and "Turn off or uninstall iCloud for Windows" in the article Set up and use iCloud for Windows.

You mail server settings do seem to be correct: Mail server settings for iCloud email clients

Have a fantastic day.

Thank you MoonJ, i have been using icould for Windows from the beginning of getting my iphone and icloud account many years ago. one prompt during my attempts to get a fix was to open my icould dialog box. the password i am using worked fine with that. i read your page from your link above for the app specific passwords, and i don't understand it, but i am using the icloud for Windows, so according to your answer above i don't need to do that.

Any suggestions with this in mind are welcome. i also would appreciate your comment on the p38 at the beginning of the server name. i wonder if that is a problem or if it is OK.

I would also appreciate any any confirmation or suggestions about the settings i am using. it would give me confidence that those are not the issue so i could focus on other attempts to fix this.

thank you again for your answer.
