I have just had to reset #1 of my HomePods and being it is a stereo speaker with #2 HomePod I reset them both. After I reset and they were back as normal I went into the settings of one to see if they'd been re-configured as stereo , I noticed that the symbol that appears in the middle of their two icons (to change L and R) was not there but yet they still worked as stereo when I tried them. Has the symbol to change the HomePods to L and R been removed?
Unpair. In the Home App go to your paired homepods; long press and select settings (gear). Choose "Ungroup Accessories" which is toward the bottom of the screen.
I'd try resetting them once again.

Right before you attempt to reset them again, delete them from "My Home" in your HomeKit....and make sure they are deleted from all iPhones and iPads in your house.
Note that you're supposed to break a stereo pair before you restore them, though I'm sure that might not always be feasible.

I have and the same thing happened , in fact the one HomePod was not resetting until I tried a few times it wassaying setup failed a few times , I thinkI'll ring apple up.
Sinc I first paired them when I first uninstall them I can only see the plots unpair ungrounds is gone. It did ask me when I first paired the HomePod on one of the homepods if I wanted to create a stereo pair and I said yes. They are working in Stereo but I cannot chapnge the sides with the symbol that’s in the centre of the two HomePod icons because it’s not there paling with thewords ungroup
