How do I connect an LG UHD 4K monitor to my MacBook Pro?

My new MacBook Pro only has the Thunderbolt inputs so the guy at Best Buy told me I could purchase a hyper drive adapter to plug into the thunderbolt input and then run the HDMI cable to the monitor and plug it into the hyper drive HDMI input.

Now I am getting a "no signal" message from the monitor it goes to sleep. I can't figure out why this isn't working?

That adapter only supports 1080p at 60 Hz. That is completely inadequate for an LG 4K display.

You should be connecting with a ThunderBolt-3 to DisplayPort adapter/cable rated for 4K:

The hub says it is designed for iPad Pro, not designed for MBP. May the design difference is just the lightning vs USB-C connector, maybe it is power usage.

If you go back to Best Buy and look for one there (I assume you need one *now*, not shipped) you can look for another. I bought the j5Create JCA153G that claims 4K AND even says "Perfect for Macbook" (quoting from the box). $30 for just the display adapter, but if you need a USB hub for USBs and a dedicated adapter for the display, at least it could work.
