I have an OS X El Capitan mac (mid 2009) and I was wondering if I could somehow connect my airpods to my computer. I don't think I can, but if there's a way, may someone please give directions as to how I may do so.

AirPods 1 requires Sierra or greater.
Airpods 2 requires 10.4.4 Mojave or greater.
They will not work on your model because you do not have a compatible version of macOS installed. If you have the 20" iMac Mid-2009 model, then you are running the maximum version of macOS supported by your hardware.
Open the case, and then press the button on the back of the case to put the AirPods into Discovery mode.
I had my AirPods paired to my Late 2009 27” iMac, before my iMac finally died about 3 months before its 10th birthday 😢
