Can you use splitter on AppleTV HD HDMI cable

My new AppleTV HD does not have optical audio output, only a mixed video/audio HDMI. My Pioneer Plasma TV Receiver only accepts video OR audio HDMI’s.

Will the AppleTV HD box let me split the HDMI cable output, and then input to two ports on the Receiver. I have heard that for copyright reasons Apple cuts off a signal if any tampering between source and destination is sensed.

I have never heard of that, unless it is broken, and I’d be highly skeptical of this assessment. HDMI was meant to carry both video and audio from its inception.

HDCP is the mandatory technology that is meant to prevent tapping into the video signal. It is not about the manufacturer per se, more about the content provider. There are HDCP compliant splitters and extractors, though.

Troubleshooting HDMI Interface:

Many Televisions only come with optical OUTPUTS, so be certain that your Television has an optical INPUT.

HDMI Cables are Audio and Video. So, I say just stick with that.

Using an HDMI Hub would be best, assuming you just want to use one source at a time. But, just go with two Apple TVs, as it would far less expensive than purchasing a new television or what have you, should it go down. due to a power failure.
